Enhancing Emergent Literacy for Infants and Toddlers

1-2-3- READ! VIRGINIA provides training and follow-up on-site coaching to infant and toddler teachers in early care and education settings throughout Virginia in the use of 1-2-3 READ!, a research-based early literacy curriculum developed by Child Development Resources (CDR).

1-2-3 READ!

  • is designed to build emergent literacy in children birth to age three through a carefully planned set of experiences that lay the foundation for reading and writing success; and
  • has been proven to result in significant, measurable gains in children’s language and cognitive development.

1-2-3 READ! Virginia uses Early Literacy Trainer/Coaches (ELTCs), to conduct 1-2-3 READ! two-day training sessions throughout Virginia on consecutive Saturdays each fall and spring in collaboration with CDR.

During 1-2-3 READ! Virginia training, participants engage in interactive learning experiences and become familiar with the curriculum materials they will use once they return home. Participants who attend training will receive six 1-2-3 READ! curriculum modules for their program. Curriculum modules contain storybooks, planning forms, vocabulary words, list of materials and supplies needed, sample story props, suggested learning opportunities, and additional resources. As participants become proficient in using the modules, they will be able to develop new modules for additional storybooks that meet the needs of the children and families in their programs.
